June 2018 President’s Message

Thank you to all who came to the blue/orange practice meet!  Sorry we did not actually get to swim! This is the first blue/ orange we did not swim in many years!

During the parent information meeting, there was a lot of items talked about. I have summarized below.

First meet is Thursday!  Reminder: Let’s be great supportive team mates and hosts!  Last year Pebble Creek won a sportsmanship award! Let’s go for 2 years in a row!!

Meet Fun Facts:

Swimmer Letter:

Each meet, a letter will be sent with important information regarding check in time, meet information, location, parking, etc. Please pay close attention to the times. Please DO NOT check in prior to the time stated.  At home meets, check in time starts at 430PM.   If you are going to be late to a meet for whatever reason, please TEXT CHRISTY. Information will be found in the parent letter sent the week of the meet.

If you arrive BEFORE check in time for home meets, plan on helping 😊  There is a lot of work that goes into home meets and there are a lot of volunteers that get to the pool early.

Check IN:

When your child checks in, your child will receive a card. The card will have information regarding which EVENT they are swimming. If your child is NOT dive certified, your child will also receive a X or O on their shoulder. This is to signify how your child should start based on this certification. If your child receives no writing on their shoulder, they are going off the blocks!

If your child did not receive their Piranhas cap, they will receive during check in!

Writing:

You may WRITE your child’s event numbers on their HAND ONLY. There should be no other writing on your child besides their hand and if they have a dive restriction. This is a rule that has been around for awhile, but bears repeating.

 

Items to consider at a swim meet:

Sharpie, towels, sweatshirt, water, snack, money for concession!

 

Parent Rep:

During the meet, if there is an issue that comes up, please see the PARENT REP, not the coach. For example, if a child needs to leave early and did not notify the coach prior to the meet, notify the parent rep. If there is an issue that arises during a meet, notify the PARENT REP.  The Parent Rep is there to handle any issue that you may have.  Our Parent Rep is Laura Cooper.

Warm-ups:

Warm-ups is an opportunity for your child to 1. Dive off the blocks/ side to get use to the pool (especially at away meets) 2. Count back stroke flags for those children who are swimming backstroke.    Please listen to the coaches as they will do 8 and under and 9 and up separately during our warm up times.

Relays:

8 and under relays are the FIRST event of the meet!  Please, if you have an 8 and under, DO NOT LET THEM WANDER after warm ups/coaches meeting. The kids will be gathered after that and taken to the clerk of the course.

9 and up Relays will be posted about event 26 in the meet. They are on the Relay boards hanging up. DO NOT LEAVE until you have checked the board.

Clerk/ Blocks

Clerk of the course for home meets is located at the diving well of the pool. The announcer will call the event numbers and if your child is swimming they will make their way over there. PLEASE ONLY THE CHILD come, not all their friends and relatives. Parents may bring their child to clerk as well, just not everyone come.  There is a lot of people at clerk!!  If parents want to take a pic, please stand behind the ropes.

The children will make their way from behind the diving well to behind the blocks. There should be NO PARENTS behind the blocks at any point in the meet except authorized individuals (clerk, ref, starter, timer, head timer).  Please make sure we keep this area cleared.

When at Clerk, it is important for your child to listen for their name.  The child will be assigned a number. That number corresponds to the lane they will be swimming in during their heat.

When your child gets behind the blocks, they will be asked their name again by the timer. This is just to ensure Sally is not swimming for Molly and vice versa!

Concession:
Concessions will be available during home meets. We will have a theme such as Southern BBQ plus a regular assortment consisting of hamburgers, hotdogs, chips, etc. Cash or credit card will be accepted.  Our very own Chef Brian creates the menu each home meet and does a wonderful job!

Also, we will have Kona Ice at our home meets. 20% of all sales go back to the swim team!

Available this year at concessions in addition to food: Goggles, straps and spirit wear!

Pool Rules:

Pool rules should be followed at all meets. This includes running. Pools WILL NOT be opened during the swim meet for ‘cooling off’ or swim time. This includes the baby pool. Please come prepared for the warmth 😊

Weather:

In the event of weather, delay, rain, thunder, etc, please LISTEN to the announcer if we are already at the pool and the meet or warm ups have started or adhere to the text messages if there is a delay prior to us being on deck.  If we must clear the pool area, PLEASE DO NOT go into the clubhouse. The outside veranda area is OK, but it does get crowded. Text messages will be the primary communication during these times so PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ARE SIGNED UP TO RECEIVE TEXTs.

Ribbons:

Ribbons for the meet will be handed out the practice AFTER the meet occurs. For example, most of our meets areWednesday, we will do ribbons on Thursday.  More information will come out about ribbons night in the ‘whats coming up’ additions that occur weekly.

Heat Ribbons are handed out at our home meets and some away pools also do these ribbons. These ribbons are for individuals who win their heat, not necessarily their event.
Event is the stroke, age group, gender specific event. Example: Girls 8 and under 25 Freestyle. The Heat is which number you are in when there are more people participating than the number of lanes. Example: 12 girls compete in the 25 Freestyle, at our HOME POOL, we will have 2 heats since we have 8 lanes. Heat numbers that are higher in number are usually your faster swimmers.

Volunteering:

It takes a lot of volunteering, especially AT HOME, to run a meet. If you have not signed up, please do so!! Your help is much appreciated in this matter!

Practicing:
Practice will continue in the EVENING ONLY this week June 10, 2018 thru June 13.

Practice will be your CHOICE starting next week June 18th.  You may choose morning or evening practice. Morning practice is preferred as there is only us at the pool but understand that that may not be feasible for all.

Practice Times starting June 18:
AM (Mon, Tues, Wed, Fri)

8 & under – 7:30 to 8:15 a.m.
9-12 – 8 to 9 a.m.
13 & older -8:45 to 9:45 a.m

PM: (Mon, Tues, Thurs)

10 and under: 615 to 7pm

11 and up: 7pm to 8pm

Adult Swim:
For those adults who want to do summer swim team as well, that will be offered by our very own Coach Jordan. Practices are 630am to 730am Mon, Tues and Fri. Cost is $40.

May 2018 President’s Message

Hi Families,

The swim season is off to a great start! It was great we were able to get into the pool the FIRST week of practice!!

For those that need to order new swim gear I would encourage all to order on the Pebble Creek Piranhas site at Swim Outlet!  A portion of all sales goes back to the team!  Website is: https://www.swimoutlet.com/pebblecreekswimteam/

Volunteering:  Volunteering is a VITAL portion of making a successful team!  This year, Christy- Team Manager, will be reaching out via email for volunteering preferences.   I would encourage everyone to respond as quickly as possible as we are making sure we are staffed and ready for our upcoming meets!  Reminder: Each family is required to at least volunteer for 5 halves or 2 full meets, whichever the family prefers.

A few reminders:

–          Mini Mite Try Out is Wednesday, May 30 at 630pm

o   A quick meeting with coaches and parents will occur at 630, then the try out will begin

§  Reminder: the coaches are looking for kiddos that can at least swim half the length of the pool. The goal is by the end of the season, they will swim the full length and participate in a meet!

–          Blue Orange Meet is Sunday, June 10 at 6pm

o   This is a great event especially for new swimmers to see what it is like to participate in a meet!

–          Swim Team night at the diamond June 23.  Tickets on sale now! Contact info@pebblecreekswimteam.com  Tickets are $8 with a portion going back to the team!

Hello Families,
The board is been very busy lately making the final touches for the upcoming season!
A few reminders:
* Registration is now OPEN!
Register online, pay online or you can come pay in person during open house.
Tell all your friends!!
*Open house is May 16. During this time you can meet the coaches, register, order swim suits, get spirit gear and get squirrels tickets!!
* Season begins May 21
Swim Suits:
This year will be using a new company for ordering swimsuits. The website is below of how you can directly order your swimsuit. A portion of your purchase will go directly back to the swim team!!
This year, we are spicing it up a little! The swimsuit choices will be navy and orange Sporti Molecule or you can choose to do a navy suit like we have in years past.

The website below has both of the swimsuits listed for your swimmer. A new suit is not mandatory for upcoming swim year. If you already have a navy blue suit, there is no requirement to purchase a new one!

Winter President’s Message

Spring has sprung.. kind of… and with that, warmer temperatures are fast approaching which means it’s time to get PIRANHAS back in the water!
A few announcements for the upcoming 2018 Season below:
April 9th: Registration is OPENED! Check out the website on April 9th and register!  Tell all the neighbors!
Open House night will be May 16th 6pm to 8pm
During Open House you can register for the team, get fitted for your swim suit and meet the coaches.
The board is very excited to announce our coaches for the 2018 Swim Season:

Jordan is our NEW Head Coach this year. He is currently at Randolph Macon. He comes from a long background of swimming and currently swims for Randolph Macon.  The board is very excited to have Jordan! Welcome Jordan!
Pamela is returning for her third year as an Asst Coach. The Board is very excited to have Pamela back! Pamela played a huge role last year with the CIT program.
Ryan is new this year, although not new to the team!  Ryan has been swimming with the team since he was 4 years old.  Welcome Ryan!
Shannon, like Ryan, is new this year.  She has swam for the team for many years and has been a HUGE part of the success of the CIT (Coaches in Training) Program.  Welcome Shannon!

November 2017 President’s Message

Hi Families!

By now, everyone is back into the new school year and swim season 2017 is just a distant memory.

What’s the NEW Board been up to?

The Board has been very busy. We have been reviewing 2017 season, member input via survey you took the time to fill out and planning for 2018 season.

Right now, the holidays are approaching! The Board has been busy planning the Santa Breakfast.  The Santa Breakfast will be held December 2 at the clubhouse from 8am to 1030am. The swim team has hosted this event for more than 15 years now.  It is not a successful event without YOU, the members!  This is the biggest fundraiser for the swim team of the year!

  2. Sign up for the Pebble Creek Swim Team EVENTS page on Facebook. This is a shareable page and has our Santa Breakfast information listed.

July 2017 President’s Message

Pebble Creek Swim Team Members,

Did you enjoyed this season?   Please, share any memories that you had this season.   

This is my final update.     It has been my pleasure and a privilege to have been your president for the past 2 seasons.    Hopefully, the changes that the boards and I made during my term you saw a positive for you, the members, which include the swimmers and their parents.    After working with Jen Colley over the past couple years, you could not have a better person stepping into the president’s position.    Jen is passionate about the swim team and works hard to support you, the members.    She has a awesome team of board members who I forsee doing great things moving forward.   Next season’s board members are shown below.

As I wind down my term, I want to thank all the parents for their support over the past couple years.    The suggestions that you shared, the volunteer time that you contributed, the support that you provided your swimmers make the swim seasons successful.    Thank you!

During my term, the focus was living to our mission statement   

The Pebble Creek Swim Team’s mission is to bring the community together in a fun, friendly, athletic, and competitive atmosphere to promote youth swimming, provide opportunities for swimmers to improve their skills, and encourage neighbors to socialize.

 

From what I have heard and seen, I believe we did a good job bringing the community together (through the events, on site vendors and fundraisers, not to mention the swim meets), creating a fun, friendly environment (through swimming under the stars, themed concession nights – great idea Brian Cooper, fun with coaches, which Shad Gilley and Ryan Hunt did an exceptional job coming up with new fun ways for coaches fun after ribbons),  providing an athletic, competitive environment for the swimmers (through our hired coaches, improved swimmer times, mini-mite successes, and competitive swim meets).     In addition to living to our mission, another area of focus during my term was becoming more transparent and providing opportunities for members to provide input, which I feel was accomplished through these president messages, enhanced and more frequent communications via social media (which Emily Depersis did an outstanding job last year and Hollie Cammarasana did this past season).   While I see we did some great things during my term, I realize there are a few things that we did not accomplish which would have made the experience better for our members, e.g. parent swims and swimmer outing.    I have shared some thoughts on how the next board could address these other opportunities, so possibly next season these other ideas can be incorporated into the swim team experience.

I want to thank the board members that I had the pleasure to partner with these past few seasons, not the mention the time, effort, and ideas that they shared.    Thank you, all!

As I wrap up this final update, I want to congratulate our coaches and swimmers on a fantastic season.   While our record was not that impressive,  I saw swimmers that competed, had fun and exhibited the qualities that you want to see in a swim team.     I want to congratulate the swimmers that qualified for Champs, a great accomplishment (see list below) and those that were invited to participate at Champs, a testament to your efforts this season (see the list below).     To cap off how great a season it was the team won a couple awards at Champs.    One was the Champs video (good job swimmers, coaches and Christy), which was a I was told the 2nd year in a row PCST won the honor.   In addition, the team won the Len Everett Sportsmanship Award for Division III, an award the team should be extremely proud as it signifies the quality of our swimmers.    Congratulations team!

Below is some statistics that GRAL President shared to GRAL board members, which you may find interesting.   Note, these stats were sent out prior to Champs and there were GRAL records set at Champs that are not reflected in the following stats.  

 

Judging by the following statistics, many teams, and the LEAGUE, had a great year by the standards we just mentioned. In keeping with tradition, I will share some stats from the year…

  • 3794 swimmers registered to swim this year, 90 more than last year!
  • 863 swimmers qualified for CHAMPS, 48 more than last year!
  • 33 GRAL records were broken this year, 2 more than last year and by 2 fewer swimmers (15)
  • Meets were a bit slower this year, probably due to all the growth. The shortest meet ended at 8:31 (and it wasn’t D4), while the longest was completed by 11:17pm.
